Move-Out Cleaning Checklist to Protect Your Deposit

    7 min readUpdated August 4, 2026

Deposit deductions are rarely about damage. They are about the oven, the fridge, the cabinet interiors and the window tracks. Landlords and property managers inspect the same handful of places every time, and those places are exactly what a rushed clean skips.

Use this checklist in order. It follows the sequence a professional crew works so you clean each surface once.

    Key takeaways

    • Clean after the unit is fully empty, not around remaining furniture.
    • Inside appliances and inside cabinets are the two highest-value hours you will spend.
    • Photograph everything at the end; documentation wins disputes.

    The order to work in

    1. 1

      Empty the unit completely

Every closet, cabinet, drawer, the garage and the balcony. Anything left behind may be billed back as a trash-out.

    2. 2

      High dust everything

Vents, ceiling fans, light fixtures, closet shelves and door frames, before touching anything below them.

    3. 3

      Kitchen

Inside the oven, inside the fridge, inside every cabinet and drawer. This is where deposits are won or lost.

    4. 4

      Bathrooms

Full fixture detail including the toilet base and bolts, shower tracks and mineral buildup.

    5. 5

      Living areas and bedrooms

Walls spot-cleaned, baseboards, outlets, doors, window interiors, tracks and blinds.

    6. 6

      Floors, exiting the unit

Vacuum then mop, working backwards toward the front door so nothing is walked on again.

    7. 7

      Photograph every room

Wide shot plus close-ups of the oven, fridge, cabinets and bathrooms, timestamped.

    Kitchen checklist

    • Oven interior, racks, broiler drawer, glass door between the panes if accessible
    • Stovetop, burners, drip pans, control knobs, hood and grease filter
    • Refrigerator interior, shelves, drawers, gasket, top and the floor and wall behind it
    • Microwave inside and out, including the cavity ceiling
    • Dishwasher gasket, filter and front panel
    • Every cabinet and drawer, inside and out, including tops of upper cabinets
    • Counters, backsplash, sink, faucet and disposal
    • Pantry shelves and floor

    Bathroom checklist

    • Tub, shower walls, door tracks and glass, including hard-water and soap scum removal
    • Toilet bowl, seat, hinges, base, bolt caps and behind the tank
    • Vanity, sink, faucet, drain, mirror and cabinet interiors
    • Exhaust fan cover and light fixtures
    • Grout lines, baseboards and floor
    • Towel bars, hooks and the back of the door

    Everywhere else

    • Spot-clean walls and remove all nails, hooks and adhesive strips
    • Wipe doors, frames, handles and switch plates
    • Clean window interiors, sills, tracks and blinds slat by slat
    • Vacuum closet floors and wipe shelving and rods
    • Clean baseboards throughout
    • Sweep the balcony, patio, entry and garage floor
    • Replace burned-out bulbs and remove all trash from the property

Timing and hard-water reality in Colorado

Schedule the clean one to two days before your walkthrough, after the movers are done and after any carpet work. Front Range water is hard, so faucets, shower doors and glass often need a descaling product and dwell time rather than more scrubbing. Start those areas early and let the product work while you clean elsewhere.

    When to hire it out

A thorough move-out clean on a two-bedroom takes most people a full day, and the appliance work is the part that gets abandoned around hour six. Professional move-out cleaning is billed at $60 per hour with us, which for many renters is less than the deduction they were risking. Managers handling multiple units should read the apartment turnover checklist instead, and see our commercial cleaning services for portfolio scheduling.
